Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a 67-52 win over EMU on Tuesday night.
Lynchburg got a double-double from Sayre Brandstatter featuring 17 points and 13 rebounds. It was her first double-double of the season and the second of her career. She had 15 rebounds and 17 points on Jan. 21, 2023 for Roanoke College against Shenandoah. That's who Lynchburg will play in Salem, Va. on Friday, Feb. 23 in the next round of the conference tournament.
Three of Brandstatter's teammates joined her in double-figures. Sammi Sever and Bree Spainhour both contributed 12, and Macey Mullins had 10.
The Hornets shot 33.3% (9-27) from 3-point range and began the night even hotter from deep going 3-5 (60%) in the first quarter. Mullins hit the first 3 of the game for the Hornets, and Brandstatter made a pair in the opening quarter as well. Both players shot well from deep in the game with Brandstatter going 3-5 and Mullins going 2-3. Despite the sharp shooting from the Hornets in the first, Lynchburg only led by three points after 10 minutes. A 3-11 (27.3%) performance from deep in the second quarter didn't help extend the lead much, and EMU was hanging around at halftime only trailing by five.
Out of halftime, the teams only combined for eight makes from the floor, but the Hornets benefited from a 5-6 performance from the free-throw line.
Lynchburg pulled away in the final quarter and opened the fourth with a 10-4 run. Mullins scored half of Lynchburg's points during the scoring burst. Brandstatter finished the fourth quarter as the leading scorer in the period with six and the game's leading scorer with 17.
Half of the eight EMU players that saw time on the court scored in double-digits, and Mya Hamlett and Kayla Surles both scored a team-high 14 points for the Royals.
Lynchburg (15-11) takes on Shenandoah on Friday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. in Salem, Va. at the Salem Civic Center. Lynchburg last won 16 games in 2021-22 when they also earned win No. 16 in the quarterfinals and advanced to the conference semis. Before 2021-22, 16 wins was the team's highest total since winning 20 in 2017-18.
