Lynchburg, Va – University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse sophomore Neely Morris scored eight goals as the Hornets secured a dominant victory over Bridgewater on Thursday 19-6.
Morris' eight goals are tied for the second-most all-time in a single game by a Lynchburg women's lacrosse player. It last happened in 2012 when Lesley Buckingham scored eight against Virginia Wesleyan. Morris also recorded two assists, and her 10 points are tied for the seventh most in a single game in program history. Three other players have recorded exactly 10 points in a game for the Hornets and four Hornets have notched eight goals.
The Hornets started the game with a series of relentless attacks keeping consistent pressure on Bridgewater's defense. Lynchburg scored six consecutive goals from the first whistle with less than two minutes between them all. Despite a goal for the Eagles towards the end of the quarter, the Hornets remained dominant throughout the first period. Morris had already completed her hat trick within the first quarter, among other notable scorers Payton Saville and Sydney Dumas.
The second quarter was much more reserved on the scoreline, but certainly not so much on the field. The Eagles outscored the Hornets 2-1 in the second period, amid a lot of back-and-forth, competitive play between the two sides. However, Lynchburg remained in the driver's seat going into halftime, claiming a 9-3 lead.
Lynchburg began the second half with similar attacking vigor to the first. Morris continued to torment the Eagles defense, putting up four more goals in the third quarter, accompanied by two goals from Jenna Norko. The Hornets extended their lead to 16-4 heading into the final period with a strong lead and showing no signs of slowing down. During the third quarter, Kayla Brady took over in net for Corinne West. West improved to 4-0 as the starting goalie making three saves. Brady, a four-year starter for the Lynchburg field hockey team, made her lacrosse debut in the crease and made two saves.
Bridgewater made several attacks in the final quarter, putting two late goals past Lynchburg to end the game. Ultimately, Lynchburg capped off a strong performance with a victory, defeating Bridgewater 19-6.
Lynchburg (4-3, 2-0 ODAC) travels to Randolph on Saturday, March 23 taking on the Wildcats at 1 p.m.
