Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team won both its games against Sweet Briar on Friday afternoon 3-0 and 1-0.
The Hornet shut out the Vixens for the 18th and 19th consecutive times. The Vixens have not scored against Lynchburg since 2008, but Friday marked the first time since 2017 that Hornets have played the Vixens, Sweet Briar rejoined the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 2024 after a seven-year absence.
The pitching duo of Kailey Dorcsis and Emily Charlton field the sweep for the Hornets Friday with Dorcsis earning her seventh win of the season and Charlton getting win No. 4.
In Game 1, Dorcsis struck out six, walked one, and allowed five hits. Kaleigh Hackett drove in all three runs for Lynchburg with a two-RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the fifth.
In Game 2, Charlton didn't get any run support until the fifth inning when Alyssa Talayumptewa drove in Jessica Strickland. While it was the only offense Lynchburg needed to seal the sweep, the Vixens threatened in the top of the seventh against Charlton. Sweet Briar got the bases loaded with no outs to start the final inning. Charlton got the fourth batter of the inning to pop out, then Madison Barnes snagged a line drive down the first-base line and stepped on first to turn an unassisted double-play and end the game.
Lynchburg (13-3, 2-0 ODAC) hosts DePauw at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 24.
