Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team swept Ferrum 3-1 and 9-1 at home on Thursday. Lynchburg only needed five innings to defeat the Panthers in Game 2 via the eight-run rule and turned a triple play in the win.
In Game 1, Kailey Dorcsis started and went the distance for her eighth win of the year. With the game tied in the bottom of the fifth, Carly Hudnall got the decisive hit driving in Addison Walter. Hudnall also had the first RBI of the day when she singled to bring Jessica Strickland home.Â
Sarah Watts gave Lynchburg some insurance the next inning with a towering homer that went over the foul pole in left. Watts also homered in Game 2, this time driving the ball to straight-away center. Her sixth homer of the year tied the game up in the bottom of the first after Ferrum got to the starter, Logan Curtis, for one in the top of the inning.Â
After Bri Hodges scored Kaitlyn Regan in the second, the Hornets used a four-run fourth and two more runs in the fifth to complete the sweep of Ferrum. Hodges scored the final run of the day after Anna Grace Terrell reached on an error. Hodges advanced to third on the hit then advanced home after the error.Â
Curtis earned her third win of the year, fanned three, and was the benefactor of a 5-4-8 triple play in the second. The Ferrum batter popped up a bunt, Walter caught it, threw to Watts covering at first to get out No. 2, then Watts hit Kaleigh Hackett covering second from center field for the third out.Â
Lynchburg (16-4, 4-0 ODAC) is ranked 25th in the NFCA poll and hosts Bridgewater on Friday, March 28 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
