Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team snapped a five-game losing streak against the Maroons by sweeping Roanoke 2-0 and 7-5 on Tuesday.
Kailey Dorcsis pitched her 12th complete game and fifth shutout in Game 1, and Alyssa Talayumptewa drove in three during Game 2.
Dorcsis worked cleanly out of bases-loaded jams in the first and sixth innings to preserve her shutout. Protecting a 2-0 lead in the sixth, Roanoke worked the bases loaded with no outs, but the junior righty got a pinch hitter to strike out for the first out of the inning then got the next two batters to pop out to end the inning.
Dorcsis' escape protected the lead created by Madison Barnes's RBI double in the first and Talayumptewa's sacrifice fly in the third.
After driving in three more runs in Game 2, Talayumptewa took over the team lead in RBI with 20. She has three more than Sarah Watts, the reigning Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week. Her first two RBI in Game 2 tied up the game in the first after Roanoke took an early 2-0 lead against Logan Curtis. After Roanoke retook the lead in the third, Talayumptewa doubled to drive in Barnes and tie the game 5-5.
Lexi Powell and Barnes added insurance runs in the fourth on a double and single, respectively. Powell was one of five Hornets to reach second on one swing of the bat. Talayumptewa, Addison Walter, Kaleigh Hackett, and Barnes also doubled.
Emily Charlton entered in the fourth before Lynchburg took the lead for good and earned the win pitching four, shutout innings. She has not allowed a run in 11 straight innings of work.
The Hornets not only earned their first win over the Maroons in five games, but they swept Roanoke for the first time since 2021.
Lynchburg (25-9, 13-5 ODAC) hosts Averett for a Senior Day double-header beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
