Virginia Beach, Va -- The Lynchburg women's lacrosse team sealed off the regular season with an 18-6 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday.
The action started early as Mya Hausauer converted her free position opportunity to give Lynchburg the lead. Lauren Fling followed up with two goals in quick succession to keep momentum in the Hornet's favor. Lynchburg limited the Marlins attacking threat in the first period and found offensive success of its own. The Hornets forced seven turnovers and only four shots from the Marlins, closing the quarter with another two goals. Lynchburg took a 5-0 lead into the first break.
Hausauer opened the scoring again, finding the net to keep pressure on the Marlins. However, mere seconds later, Virginia Wesleyan found its goal. The Marlins found success in the draw controls forcing a closer encounter in the second period. Lynchburg was determined to keep a tight hold on the game and quickly responded to each Virginia Wesleyan opportunity. Although the Marlins scored late in the half to cut the lead again, Lynchburg headed into halftime up 10-3.
Lynchburg showed attacking prowess, scoring five goals in each of the first three quarters. Sydney Dumas scored her fourth goal of the afternoon to start the quarter before Emma Timberg and Payton Saville followed shortly after to take back control of the game for the Hornets. Lynchburg outshot Virginia Wesleyan 10-2 and dominated the draw-control exchanges throughout the third period. Despite a late consolation for the Marlins, Lynchburg went into the final quarter with a 15-4 advantage.
The Hornets were first on the scoreboard every quarter; Margaret Scoggin converted her free position shot to start the fourth quarter on top. Both teams traded back and forth for the game's final four goals. The Marlins responded to both of Lynchburg's goals, however, it wouldn't impact the overall outcome as the Hornets held on to claim the 18-6 victory. Dumas recorded five total goals and picked up five ground balls while Neely Morris claimed six ground balls to go with her pair of goals. Lynchburg dominated most of the exchanges on both ends of the field to bounce back from a tough loss in its last game. The Hornets (10-7, 6-3 ODAC) now move into Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament play. Lynchburg earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament and receives a bye into the quarterfinals. Lynchburg will play the winner of Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan in Lynchburg, Va. in Tuesday, April 30.
