Lynchburg, Va -- The Lynchburg women's lacrosse team defeated Randolph-Macon 14-13 in its CODE RED game Sunday.
Neely Morris scored six goals with an assist, Mya Hausauer recorded a hat trick, Meredith Bornholdt forced two turnovers, and Corinne West secured her eighth win and four saves.
The first quarter foreshadowed the close-fought game that would take place as Lynchburg found the net early. The Yellow Jackets responded less than a minute later before taking the lead momentarily. Both teams were evenly matched by the end of the period, sharing six goals evenly at three apiece and forcing six turnovers each.
Lynchburg scored three unanswered goals to open the second quarter, looking to take a firm hold on the game. Neely Morris scored the first two goals of the period to follow her two-goal first quarter. Randolph-Macon found attacking momentum, successfully cutting the Lynchburg lead to just one with 30 seconds left in the half. Eager to regain momentum, Morris found the net again, sending Lynchburg into the break with an 8-6 advantage.
Lynchburg's Mya Hausauer put Lynchburg three goals clear to start the second half, but the Yellow Jackets, determined to stay within reach, chipped at the lead. Randolph-Macon was awarded a free-position opportunity, two goals behind with two minutes left in the quarter. The Yellow Jackets converted the opportunity, heading into the final period only a goal behind. Both teams recorded six shots and four turnovers in the quarter, keeping the game close defensively and offensively.
It was Randolph-Macon who came out firing in the final period, equalizing the game and taking the lead. Less than a minute later, Lynchburg found its own equalizer through Sydney Dumas before Morris reclaimed the advantage again. The Yellow Jackets refused to go down easy, fighting back into the game one final time. Following a quick two-goal response from Lynchburg, the stage was set for a tense final two minutes. Despite a last-ditch effort from Randolph Macon, the Hornets held on to claim a close 14-13 victory. Lynchburg avenged a tight 16-15 loss from last season in the conference tournament, making this the third consecutive meeting between the two sides decided by a single goal.
Lynchburg (8-4, 5-1 ODAC) takes on Averett at home in its next game on Wednesday, April 7 at 7 p.m.
