Women's lacrosse downs Averett

Lynchburg, Va -- The Lynchburg women's lacrosse team picked up its sixth conference win of the season defeating Averett 18-3 on Wednesday night.

Lynchburg started the game relentlessly on the attack and found the net just two minutes into the first quarter. Following the opening goal, the Hornets kept a tight grip on the game, putting up 19 shots while holding the Cougars to just one throughout the quarter. After finding the net for the first two goals, Tori King and Neely Morris took over, hounding Cougar defenders constantly. King completed a first-quarter hat trick with one assist, while Morris found the net twice with three assists. The Hornets went into the break with a 9-0 advantage, and momentum on their side.

Sydney Dumas converted a free-position opportunity to keep the Hornets on the front foot in the second quarter. Shortly after, Reagan Bradley was on the scoresheet to complete her hat trick before the Cougars could respond. Averett finally broke the Lynchburg defense towards the end of the period, taking a consolation into halftime with the score at 11-1.

King was at it again in the third quarter, finding her fourth goal of the game to tie her career-high five points. Lynchburg followed up with three more goals, Payton Saville netted twice to give Lynchburg a 15-1 lead headed into the final period.

Averett began to find attacking success in the final quarter, putting two goals past Lynchburg. Despite the Cougar's late rally, Lynchburg held its composure as Sydney Dumas closed out the game in the final minute with her 39 goal of the season. Dumas is already two goals away from her full-season goal tally in 2023 (41), putting on another admirable attacking display. Lynchburg (9-4, 6-1 ODAC) continues its perfect record against the Cougars, stretching its record to 8-0.

The Hornets are back to home action for Senior Day on Saturday, April 13 at 5 p.m. against Christopher Newport.
