Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg men's volleyball team dropped their first game of the season at home to Virginia Wesleyan in a 3-0 sweep.
In the first meeting between the two programs, Lynchburg welcomed the Marlins with a competitive first frame. After trading points through the opening points, WVU began to pull away after an 8-3 run. Nevertheless, after a series of attacking errors from the Marlins, Lynchburg slowly began to crawl back into the set. However, in the end, the Marlins were able to secure the win 25-21.
In the ensuing sets, Virginia Wesleyan showcased why they checked in at third in the preseason ODAC standings. In the second frame, Jamare Wills recorded five of his 11 game-leading kills on the night. The Marlins went on to cruise to a 25-15 victory. The Marlins then carried their momentum in what became the final frame of the night. The Marlins out-hit the Hornets .273 to .053 while also collecting four aces during a dominant third set. Virginia Wesleyan walked away with another 25-15 win to seal the victory.
Nick Redding led the Hornets in kills on the night, recording six. Mason Kenna and Jeremiah Costello tied for the second-most on the team with five each. Noah Wolff tallied 11 assists along with one solo block.
Lynchburg now turns to the road once again for two matches this weekend in Ashland, Va. Their first opponent will be Messiah on Friday, Jan. 24, at 5 p.m. The Hornets' next home game will be Feb. 1 vs. Averett.
