Fredericksburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's tennis team had a solid collective performance at the 2025 ITA DIII Men's Southeast Regional Championships this past week, hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
The Hornets found some success in the singles event, but excelled in the doubles event. In singles,
Ricards Spaks took part in the champ singles draw and earned a dominant first-round win. Spaks took down Hampden-Sydney's Thomas Davis with a commanding 6-0, 6-4 final before falling in the round of 32.
Daniel Gomes participated in the B1 draw and dropped to Chaitanya Irkar of Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, 6-0, and later was edged in the consolation bracket by Haverford's Chaitanya Krishna.
Lynchburg had two pairs participating in doubles. Patricio Zepeda and Spaks teamed up in the champ doubles draw, while the duo of
Sebastian Sierra and Gomes were a part of the B2 draw. Although Zepeda and Spaks fell in the first round of the champ draw to Christopher Newport's James Smith and Bhuvanesh Kumaresan, 8-2, the Hornet pair found success in the consolation bracket.
Zepeda and Spaks matched up against ODAC foes Sahil Arora and Harrison Silver from Washington and Lee, handily defeating the Generals group, 8-2. The Lynchburg pair then advanced to battle against Hampden-Sydney's Davis and Emerson Rice, edging them out in a close bout with a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4). Gomes and Sierra narrowly defeated Ian Ricardo Arenas and Lorenzo Neri of Catholic in a match that finished with the exact same score as the aforementioned match of Zepeda and Spaks before ending their doubles action in the semifinals.
The Hornets will have one more fall competition for the 2025 season against Southern Virginia at home on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
