Hornets Take Down Methodist, 83-72

Rocky Mount, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball took to NC Wesleyan for the Jean Edge Classic and secured an 83-72 win over Methodist at Everett Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (2-0) used a dominant first half and efficient perimeter shooting to take control early and withstand a late push from the Monarchs. Lynchburg set the tone immediately, racing out to a 26-11 lead in the first quarter behind a balanced offense and a sharp defensive effort that forced four turnovers. Kate Littlejohn led the early surge with eight first-quarter points, including a pair of threes, while Caitlin Canada provided a spark off the bench with six points and two steals. The Hornets continued to build their advantage in the second period, stretching the margin to 44-20 at halftime behind steady rebounding and a 42.9 percent shooting effort in the quarter.

Methodist responded in the third, posting 29 points and shooting 60 percent from the floor, but Lynchburg maintained its composure. Timely scoring from Canada, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds, along with consistent production from Audra Petty and Littlejohn, helped keep the Hornets in front. Littlejohn totaled a team-high 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting, including four made threes, while also adding three assists.

Petty contributed 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds, and Taylor Brown added six points and nine boards as Lynchburg outrebounded Methodist 41-37. Brooke Cason also reached double figures with 10 points and three rebounds. The Hornets' bench proved impactful, accounting for 31 total points.

Lynchburg closed out the win with a 21-point fourth quarter, sealing its first victory of the season. The Hornets finished the afternoon shooting .471 percent from the field and 10-for-27 from beyond the arc, maintaining the lead for more than 38 minutes of game time.

The Hornets will continue action in the Jean Edge Classic against host NC Wesleyan tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3:30 p.m.
