Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team opened its season with a strong 69-53 win over Marymount on Saturday afternoon in Turner Gym, using balanced scoring and a decisive second-half surge to pull away.
The Hornets (1-0) set the tone early with a 21-point first quarter, fueled by efficient perimeter shooting and composure in transition. The Hornets knocked down five threes in the opening period and carried a 21-12 lead into the break between quarters. Marymount responded with a more competitive second frame, but Lynchburg maintained its advantage and entered halftime ahead 33-28.
After the break, Lynchburg delivered its strongest stretch of the day. The Hornets shot 43.8 percent from the field in the third quarter and outscored Marymount 22-15, capitalizing on defensive stops and timely three-point shooting. Lynchburg finished the afternoon 11-of-27 from beyond the arc and 25-of-60 overall.
Audra Petty led Lynchburg with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including four made threes, while adding nine rebounds.
Kate Littlejohn followed with 19 points, five assists, and three steals in an all-around performance.
Kayla Terry added 10 points off the bench, knocking down two threes and going two-for-two at the line.
Brooke Cason contributed six points and a team-high five assists, and
Taylor Brown scored four while pulling in three rebounds and adding four steals.
Lynchburg also received important defensive contributions, forcing 20 Marymount turnovers and converting them into 19 points. The Hornets' depth produced 16 bench points as the team maintained control throughout the second half.
The women's basketball crew now gears up for the NC Wesleyan Classic next weekend to face the likes of Methodist and NC Wesleyan.
