Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team sealed its second consecutive home game by taking down Virginia Wesleyan, 72-49, on Thursday night in Turner Gymnasium for Code Red.
The Hornets (8-13, 5-9) had their five starters combine for all but five of the team's 72 points. Junior forward
Bree Spainhour led the way with 19 points while backcourt tandem
Olivia Harris, a senior, and sophomore
Kate Littlejohn netted 18 and 17 points, respectively. Freshman guard
Audra Petty added 10 points while junior guard
Brooke Cason tallied three points. Spainhour added eight boards, four blocks, two assists and one steal to her solid all-around performance.
With 3:04 left on the clock in the first period, the Marlins owned an 11-5 advantage. Lynchburg held VWU scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and saw Harris score five in the final minute of the period. After Harris finished an offensive possession with a bucket in the paint, she earned a conventional three-point play in the ending seconds of the period to cut the deficit to one.Â
Virginia Wesleyan had the edge for the majority of the second quarter, but by no more than four points. The Hornets went on an 8-2 run in the last two minutes before halftime to jump ahead, leading 27-25 at the break. During that stretch, Spainhour contributed four points while Harris and Littlejohn added two each.
Lynchburg did not trail for the remainder of the outing. From the 5:31-mark until there was 1:01 left in the third period, the Hornets held the Marlins scoreless and 10 consecutive points, taking a 46-32 lead. Spainhour paved the way with six of the squad's points during that span. The Hornets stormed away in the final 10 minutes, outscoring VWU 26-15 in the final quarter.
Bre Robinson scored a team-best 17 points in the affair while grabbing seven rebounds and swiping two steals. Jaiden Hunter and Keagan Schwab added eight points apiece.Â
Next up on the slate is the final road matchup of the regular season at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m.
