Women's Hoops Earns Assertive 73-45 Victory Over Averett

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team got back on track with a solid 73-45 victory over the Averett Cougars on Wednesday night in Turner Gym.

The Hornets (7-12, 4-8) had six performers score eight or more points led by junior guard Ashley Vandergrift, who tied her career-high with 15 points. Guards Kate Littlejohn, a sophomore, senior Olivia Harris, and junior Brooke Cason each tallied nine points while freshman guard Audra Petty and junior forward Bree Spainhour tallied eight points apiece. Cason added three blocks and two steals while grabbing five rebounds to contribute to her all-around performance.

Lynchburg held Averett to just six points in the first quarter and notched 26 to take a 20-point advantage after 10 minutes. The Cougars owned a 6-4 edge at the 6:10-mark in the first period before the Hornets nailed 16 consecutive points to end the first quarter.

The home team added eight straight points out of the break to take a 28-point lead with 6:05 remaining in the second period. Throughout that span, the Hornets held Averett scoreless for 10:32. The Hornets coasted the rest of the way with an advantage of 16-or-more for the remainder of the game.

The Hornets scored the most points of the season in tonight's contest. The squad made 25-of-55 (.455 percent) from the field and equaled the same percentage from beyond the arc, cashing 10-of-22. Lynchburg added 13-of-16 from the foul line, the fourth-most free throws made in an outing this season. On the defensive end, the Hornets held the Cougars to .274 percent from the field and just .190 percent from long range.

Next time out, the Hornets take to the road to face No. 21 Washington and Lee in Lexington, Va. on Saturday, February 8 at 4 p.m.
