Softball Claims One Win In Methodist Doubleheader

Fayetteville, N.C. -- The Lynchburg softball squad split their doubleheader on the road to Methodist, losing the first 3-4 and winning the second game 4-1.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Lynchburg bats got rolling in the opening frame. With back-to-back base knocks to begin the game, Sarah Watts flew out to left field to bring in Lexi Powell for a 1-0 lead.

The Monarchs found the equalizer in the bottom of the third off an infield error from Hornets.

The fifth frame provided fireworks from both sides. Lynchburg goes on the board in the top of the inning with an RBI single from Alex DiNardo to allow Jessica Strickland to score. Shortly after, an infield error from the Monarchs brought in Regan for an unearned run.

Down by two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Methodist rapidly retook the momentum. A series of Lynchburg errors brought in the first run of the fifth for the Monarchs to cut the deficit to one. The next batter then laced a double to tie up the contest. With the lead in sight, a base hit from the Monarchs provided the game-winner for a 3-4 final.

After a brief intermission, both sides retook the diamond for the second game of the day. The two sides found themselves in a defensive affair early on. Through the first four innings, each team tallied two base hits but no runs.

Two walks and a base hit from Zoe Elliot to begin the fifth frame kick-started the Hornet offense. Brianna Orange flew out to right field to move runners from station to station and score the first run. Addison Walter then laid down a bunt to bring in another run for the Hornets. Elliot rounded the bases on an error from the Monarchs' catcher to tally the third run in the fifth.

Powell added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a double to left field for Elliot to tab her second run of the day.

Methodist scared across their sole run of the second match in the final frame off of an infield error from Lynchburg. Nevertheless, the Hornets claimed a 4-1 win.

Emily Charlton threw all seven innings in game two, allowing six hits, one unearned run, one walk, and three strikeouts.

Lynchburg (9-3) returns home for a doubleheader with No. 13 Salisbury (10-1) on Wednesday, March 19, for their next matchup.
