Lexington, Va. – The University of Lynchburg outdoor track & field squads tackled local competition at the Washington & Lee Carnival this weekend, while a group of Hornets traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to compete at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational.
Just six days removed from the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Rochester, N.Y., Lynchburg opened its outdoor campaign and five-week sprint through the regular season ahead of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships.Â
In Myrtle Beach, Margo Fox competed in the women's heptathlon and tallied 3942 points for fifth in the field. The junior finished in the top five of five events, including a fourth-place result in the shot put (35' 9½" or 10.91m).
Betsy Mohnkern clocked 14.51 in the women's 100m hurdle final to finish fourth overall. She finished prelims with an identical time.Â
In field events, Kacey Kelly improved her javelin personal best by almost two meters, setting a 37.34m (122' 6") mark for fourth. Kenzie Swicegood finished ninth in the women's shot put with an 11.37m (37' 3¾") throw.Â
At Washington & Lee, Randy White led all racers in the men's 1500m run with a 3:57.43 finish, one of just three runners to dip under four minutes.
Hannah Edwards clinched another event victory for the distance team with a 2:19.55 showing in the women's 800m run. Grad student Courtney Drumm, who returned for her final outdoor season with Lynchburg, clocked 2:21.23 for third place.
Rylee Turner placed fourth in the women's 100m dash with a 12.84 result, her first time racing under 13 seconds in the event. Turner placed seventh in Saturday's 200m dash with a 26.09 finish.
In other sprint events, Nick Raya crossed the line in fourth for the men's 200m dash with 22.55 on the clock. Anna Miller solidified a 1:09.92 finish in her 400m hurdle debut for the outdoor season. Brian Flowers earned fifth place with a 50.60 finish in the 400m dash, his season debut after missing the indoor season due to injury.
In field events, Aidan Hipp (1.94m or 6' 4¼" ), Jaren Lee (1.94m or 6' 4¼") and Elijah Rose (1.89m or 6' 2¼") finished first, second, and fourth in the men's high jump, respectively. Demetri Hinton finished first in the men's triple jump with a 14.02m (46') leap in his final attempt.
Other top-five finishes included Julian Powell earning fifth in the men's pole vault (4.16m or 13' 7¾"), Guillermo Martino finished fifth in the men's long jump (6.38m or 20' 11¼"), and Kiara Smith finished fifth in the women's triple jump (10.60m or 34' 9½").
The Hornets return home to host their first outdoor meet of the season on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 with the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational on the schedule.
