Ashland, Va. --Â The Lynchburg women's lacrosse team fell in a closely contested matchup against Randolph-Macon, 13-12.
McKenna Steinau led the Hornets with a team-high four goals, marking the fourth time this season she has reached that mark. Sydney Dumas recorded a hat trick with three goals, while Neely Morris contributed one goal and tied her career high with three assists.
Dumas opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the game, but the Yellow Jackets responded with three unanswered goals to close out the first quarter.
Steinau and Mya Hausauer quickly answered with two goals to start the second quarter, tying the game. The Lynchburg offense continued to push, scoring four more goals before halftime. However, Randolph-Macon matched their efforts with four goals of their own, sending both teams into the intermission knotted at 7-7.
Coming out of the break, the Yellow Jackets struck first with two quick goals. But Isabella Vogel and Steinau responded immediately, keeping the game tied heading into the final quarter.
With 15 minutes remaining, neither team backed down. Hausauer gave Lynchburg an early lead in the fourth, scoring just two minutes in. From there, both teams traded goals back and forth. After each squad netted three goals in the final quarter, Randolph-Macon delivered the decisive blow with a goal in the final nine seconds, securing the win.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for Lynchburg. The Hornets (6-3) will play their final non-conference game of the season on Thursday, March 27, when they take on Southern Virginia (5-5) in Buena Vista, Va.
