Box Score 2 Pulaski, Va. --Â The Hornet baseball squad split their doubleheader against the Roanoke Maroons, falling 8-7 in the opener before bouncing back with a dominant 11-1 victory in the second game.
In the first matchup of the afternoon, Joe Munitz, Benton Jones, and Sean Pokorak each recorded two base hits. Pokorak led the team with four RBIs and two runs scored. Tyler Kaltreider took the mound to start, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters.
Lynchburg jumped out to a commanding lead in the opening frame. An RBI double down the right-field line from Munitz brought B. Garcia home for the first run. Jones followed with an RBI double of his own down the left side before Pokorak launched a two-run homer, giving the Hornets a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first.
Pokorak struck again in the third inning, belting another two-run homer in his next plate appearance.
Roanoke slowly chipped away at Lynchburg's lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the third and another in the sixth to make it a 6-2 ballgame.
Despite Lynchburg adding another run in the top of the seventh, the Maroons caught fire at the plate in the seventh and eighth innings. A four-run rally in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth ultimately propelled Roanoke to an 8-7 comeback victory.
The Hornets responded emphatically in the second game. All nine Lynchburg batters recorded a hit, with three players notching multi-hit performances. Logan Webster led the way, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Lynchburg went scoreless in just three innings in the second contest. In the third, a series of base hits put the Hornets ahead by three runs. Later that inning, Ryder Warren crushed a ball down the right-field line for the first home run of his collegiate career, adding two more runs to Lynchburg's tally.
The Hornets could seemingly do no wrong in this matchup. In the fifth inning, Garcia stole home, and in the seventh, Munitz followed suit, stealing home for the final run of the day.
Lynchburg (20-4) returns home for a matchup against Pfeiffer (8-16) on Tuesday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m.
