Softball Snags Two Wins Over EMU

Lynchburg, Va. --The Hornets softball squad won two games, 4-5 (8) and 8-0 (5), against the Eastern Mennonite Royals in a doubleheader.

In the first game of the afternoon, Sarah Watts and Kaliegh Hackett led the charge for the Hornets, each recording two hits and one RBI. Hackett tabbed three stolen bases on the contest as well, setting a new career-high. Kaleigh Dorcsis threw all eight innings for Lynchburg, allowing seven hits, and three walks, and finished with 10 strikeouts.

In the first frame, both offenses got going with early fireworks. The Royals began the contest with a solo home run to kick off the affair to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run from Watts.

With two runners on the top of the second, EMU connected on back-to-back base knocks to drive in two more runs for a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lynchburg responded with a double from Alyssa Talayumptewa cleared the bases to drive in Jessica Strickland and Watts to tie the game at 3-3.

After extra innings were needed to determine the outcome, a single from Hackett in the eighth brought in watts to seal the victory.

After a brief intermission, the two sides retook the diamond for the second game of the day.

Hackett and Talayumptewa finished with a team-leading two hits and a combined six RBIs. Emily Charlton controlled the circle throughout the affair, totaling three hits and five strikeouts.

The Hornets scored all of their eight runs in the first three innings of the game, five of which came in the second frame.
