Raleigh, N.C. --The Lynchburg softball team kicked off the William Peace Triangle Classic with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Piedmont. However, in their second game of the afternoon, the Hornets fell 4-2 to No. 19 Muskingum.
Kailey Dorcsis pitched a complete game for the Hornets, tallying five strikeouts while allowing just four singles. Carly Hudnall and Sarah Watts each recorded a hit in the contest.
Through the first five and a half innings, neither team was able to push a run across in a tightly contested defensive battle. In the bottom of the sixth, Hudnall reached base on a walk and quickly put herself in scoring position, swiping one of Lynchburg's two stolen bases on the day.
With a runner on second, Watts delivered the play of the game. She notched her first hit of the contest with a clutch double, bringing Hudnall home for the game's only run.
Piedmont put a runner on base in the top of the seventh after an error, but Dorcsis shut the door with a strikeout to seal the 1-0 victory.
In their second game, Lynchburg took on No. 19 Muskingum in another tough matchup.
The Charlton sisters held down the circle for Lynchburg. Kate Charlton appeared for five innings, allowing just one hit. Emily Charlton stepped in for two frames, allowing three hits, three walks, and claiming two strikeouts. Lexi Powell and Madison Barnes each recorded two hits for the Hornets in the batters box.Â
The Fighting Muskies struck first in the opening frame with a double to right-center field, but the Hornets responded in the bottom half. Barnes singled up the middle, driving in Powell to even the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless second inning, Muskingum capitalized on a Lynchburg error to start the third. Back-to-back singles brought in a run to give the Muskies the lead. A walk, a wild pitch, and a fielder's choice added two more runs, extending Muskingum's advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Barnes came through again, driving in Hudnall with a single to cut the deficit to two. However, Muskingum held firm, fending off the Hornets to secure the 4-2 win.
Lynchburg (6-2) now turns its focus to tomorrow's matchups against Marymount (3-5) and Denison (5-4).
