Softball Clinches Road Sweep Over Roanoke

Salem, Va. — The University of Lynchburg softball team picked up a pair of conference road wins over Roanoke, defeating the Maroons 3-1 and 6-1 to complete the sweep.

Lynchburg struck first in game one, breaking through in the third inning. Bri Hodges led off with a double, and after a well-placed bunt by Layla Lietzen moved pinch runner Kali Monahan to third, Lexi Powell delivered a sacrifice fly to center to put the Hornets up 1-0. Roanoke quickly responded with a run in the fourth to even the score.

The Hornets pulled away late, capitalizing in the sixth inning. Alyssa Talayumptewa and Sarah Watts reached scoring position with no outs, setting the stage for Madison Barnes. Barnes came through with a clutch RBI single to bring home the go-ahead run. Watts added an insurance run in the seventh, driving in Powell with a single to right, securing the 3-1 victory.

Powell, Watts, and Barnes all recorded multi-hit performances in game one, while Kailey Dorcsis was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game for her 11th win of the season.

Lynchburg carried that momentum into game two, starting with a second-inning offensive burst. With two outs and a runner on first, back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Powell, who dropped a bloop single into left to score two. A throwing error brought in a third run, and Carly Hudnall followed with an RBI double to cap a four-run frame.

Roanoke scored its only run of game two in the third, but the Hornets' pitching staff shut things down from there. Emily Charlton and Dorcsis combined to keep the Maroons in check, limiting their offensive chances.

Lynchburg tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings—Watts knocked in a run with a double, and Kaitlyn Regan came around to score on an error—sealing the 6-1 win.

The Hornets now return home following a six-game road trip and will face No. 3 Christopher Newport on Saturday, April 19.
