Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. — The Lynchburg softball team came up short in a hard-fought doubleheader against No. 3 Christopher Newport, falling 7-0 in game one and 2-0 in game two.
The opener quickly turned into a defensive showcase, with both teams delivering strong performances in the field and in the circle. The game featured multiple highlight-reel double plays and stellar pitching from both sides.
Senior right-hander Kailey Dorcsis got the start for the Hornets and was dominant early, allowing just three hits through the first five innings. However, the Captains' offense found its rhythm in the sixth. A walk and back-to-back singles opened the frame, ultimately resulted in two runs. Christopher Newport followed with a two-run homer to take a 4-0 lead.
The Captains added three more insurance runs in the seventh. Jamie Martin closed out the game with another impressive inning, limiting Lynchburg to just two hits in the affair and securing the shutout.
After the break, game two mirrored the first with another tight defensive battle.
Emily Charlton took the circle for Lynchburg and was equally impressive, holding the Captains to three hits through five innings. But once again, Christopher Newport struck in the sixth. Two singles and a pair of stolen bases put runners on second and third with no outs. A Meredith Brickner single to left drove in both runs to give CNU the lead.
Lynchburg looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together two hits but unable to convert them into runs. CNU's Caroline Alger was sharp in the circle, allowing just three hits and one walk to preserve the 2-0 win.
The Hornets (21-13) will return to action on Tuesday, April 22, traveling to Ferrum for their penultimate regular season doubleheader.
