Lynchburg Sweeps Guilford

Lynchburg, Va. – The Hornets' softball squad secured their second consecutive sweep on Moon Field, defeating Guilford 9-0 (5) and 6-1.

In the first game of the afternoon, Sarah Watts and Alyssa Talayumptewa each recorded two hits and two RBIs. Kailey Dorcsis threw the opening four innings for Lynchburg, allowing two hits, one walk, and finishing with three strikeouts. Kate Charlton closed out the game in the final inning, retiring all three batters in order.

Talayumptewa got the Lynchburg offense rolling early, smacking a double down the left side to bring in Lexi Powell.

After a single from Anna Grace Terrell and a walk by Zoe Elliot, Powell drove in both runners with a single to center field. With Powell and Layla Lietzan on base, Watts singled to right, bringing in two more runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Hornets sealed the game when a Guilford error led to a Lietzan inside-the-park home run. Talayumptewa then notched her second RBI of the game with a single, allowing Adison Walter to score. A Madison Barnes triple cleared the bases for the second four-run inning of the day, ultimately securing the run-rule victory.

After the intermission, the Hornet bats stayed hot, racking up 12 hits in the second game of the afternoon.

Powell and Carly Hudnall each recorded multi-hit performances, with three and two hits, respectively. Kate Charlton got the start and picked up right where she left off in game one with an excellent performance. Charlton allowed just four hits and one run. Emily Charlton and Logan Curtis closed out the game, combining for five strikeouts.

After a string of singles to open the first inning, Barnes drove in two runs to put the Hornets ahead. Hudnall then extended Lynchburg's lead with another single, bringing Barnes home.

After the Quakers got on the board in the second, Lynchburg extended their lead in the fourth with a double from Bri Hodges, allowing Alex Love to round the bases.

The Hornets added insurance runs in the fifth when Kaitlyn Regan scored on a passed ball, followed by a Hudnall single that brought Hackett home.

Lynchburg (13-9) now sits at .500 in conference play, with the Averett Cougars (11-15) up next for a road doubleheader on Saturday, April 5.
