Lynchburg, Va. -- In the battle of the Hill City rivals, sophomore guard
Audra Petty produced a career-high 31 points as the University of Lynchburg women's basketball team defeated Randolph, 67-42, on Wednesday night in the Frances and Don Giles Gymnasium.
Petty's collegiate-best night came from hitting 12-of-20 shots from the field, including two 3-pointers. The Randleman, N.C. native also finished with a five-for-seven effort from the free throw line and grabbed four rebounds.
Kate Littlejohn added 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while
Bree Spainhour contributed 10 rebounds, six assists, and five points to help Lynchburg finish with a 40-30 advantage on the boards.
After a tight opening quarter, the Hornets (11-7, 4-5 ODAC) stormed ahead of the WildCats (8-10, 2-7) and controlled the game over the final three periods. The two sides were deadlocked in an 11-11 tie after the first quarter. Lynchburg began to separate in the second quarter, outscoring Randolph 20-10 behind improved shooting and activity on the glass. Petty was a significant contributor during the stretch with 14 of Lynchburg's 20 points in the quarter. The Hornets shot .444 percent from the field in the period and took a 31-21 lead into halftime.
Lynchburg delivered its strongest stretch of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Randolph 22-7 to extend the lead to 53-28. To start off the second half, the Hornets strung together a rally of 12 consecutive points, holding the WildCats scoreless until the 3:53 mark in the period. Littlejohn led the way with five points during the run, while Petty netted four points and
Brooke Cason hit one from long range. The Hornets shot .538 percent from the floor in the quarter and connected on three shots from beyond the arc.
Randolph attempted to respond in the fourth quarter, but Lynchburg maintained control by matching the Wildcats with 14 points in the final period. The Hornets finished the game shooting .426 percent from the field and held Randolph to .298 percent shooting. Lynchburg also held advantages in points in the paint (34-18), second-chance points (8-4), and fast-break points (10-0) on the way to a second straight win in ODAC play.
The Hornets have a quick turnaround before returning to action this Saturday, Jan. 31 to take on Randolph-Macon in Turner Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
