Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team battled back-and-forth against Randolph-Macon, but ultimately fell short, 68-58, on Saturday afternoon in Turner Gymnasium.
The Hornets (13-6, 7-3 ODAC)Â kept the game within reach for most of the contest, but the Yellow Jackets (11-8, 4-6)Â maintained control late to secure the road victory. Lynchburg was within striking distance with 2:20 left, down six points, but RMC's Anna Wilcox hit a 3-pointer that was followed up by a lay-in from Riley White, which put the Yellow Jackets ahead by 11 with 1:11 on the clock and secured their victory.
The game opened with both teams trading baskets in the first quarter, though Randolph-Macon gradually built momentum and took a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes. The Hornets kept the pressure on in the second quarter, scoring 13 points, but Randolph-Macon extended its advantage to 33-25 by the halftime intermission.
Lynchburg showed resilience in the third quarter, matching Randolph-Macon with a 15-point period. The Hornets went a perfect five-for-five from the free throw line in the quarter and cut into the deficit, trailing 47-40 heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Lynchburg scored 18 points and continued to attack the paint, but Randolph-Macon answered with 21 points to keep separation on the scoreboard. The Hornets finished the game shooting .373 percent from the field and .895 percent from the free throw line, while owning a narrow 30-32 disadvantage in points in the paint.
Littlejohn led Lynchburg offensively by tying her season-high with 21 points on eight-of-12 shooting, adding six rebounds, two steals, and one block while playing over 37 minutes of action.
Bree Spainhour followed with 14 points and six rebounds, converting all eight of her free throw attempts.
Selah Parker contributed six points, five rebounds, and two steals while
Audra Petty added 11 points and five boards.
Randolph-Macon finished with advantages in second-chance points (15-4) and bench scoring (8-3). Lynchburg recorded nine steals and seven blocks defensively, but could not overcome the gap late.
Next up, the Hornets will host Guilford for the squad's Code Red in Turner Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
