Hornets Defeated By Quakers, 70-60

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team feuded back-and-forth against Guilford but was unable to overcome a first-half deficit and fell, 70-60, on Wednesday night in Turner Gymnasium.

Although the Hornets (11-9, 4-7 ODAC) took an early four-point edge halfway through the first quarter, the Quakers (17-3, 8-3) established momentum in the final five minutes of the period by scoring 12 straight points and held the advantage for the rest of the contest. Giannopoulou was the main contributor during the stretch, scoring six during the rally. The Hornets trimmed the deficit to just one point, 47-46, with two minutes to go in the third quarter after a rally of seven consecutive points, four of which came from Littlejohn. The Quakers finished the period on a 7-2 run that sent them into the final quarter with a 54-47 advantage.

Guilford shot .529 percent from the field in the first quarter and built a 22-14 lead after 10 minutes. Lynchburg connected on .400 percent of its shots in the period, highlighted by two 3-pointers from Brooke Cason. GC continued to maintain control in the second, outscoring Lynchburg 14-12 to take a 36-26 advantage into halftime.

Kate Littlejohn led Lynchburg offensively with 17 points while adding six rebounds and three assists while chipping in two blocks and one steal on the defensive end. Audra Petty followed with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Cason contributed eight points, six rebounds, and four steals. Caitlin Canada provided a spark off the bench with nine points and two steals, while Bree Spainhour added six points and four assists.

Lynchburg responded with its strongest stretch in the third quarter, outscoring Guilford 21-18 while shooting .667 percent from the field in the period. Although the Hornets came within one point of equalizing the score in the quarter, Guilford went back ahead and held a seven-point lead heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Lynchburg continued to apply pressure but was unable to complete the comeback. Guilford scored 16 points in the final period to maintain its lead, while the Hornets added 13 points.

Lynchburg finished the night shooting .364 percent from the field and .708 percent from the free throw line, while Guilford shot .359 percent overall but converted 21-of-23 attempts at the charity stripe. Guilford held a 44-37 rebounding advantage and scored 36 points in the paint compared to Lynchburg's 34. Additionally, the Hornets recorded 12 steals and forced 21 turnovers.

Next on the slate for Lynchburg is a bout against No. 5 Washington and Lee at home on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.
