Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's tennis team opened up spring play with a conference victory over Randolph-Macon, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Crosswhite Athletic Club.
The Hornets (2-0) took down the Yellow Jackets (0-3) in commanding fashion, claiming four straight clinching points en route to the win. Lynchburg took control early by sweeping all three doubles matches.
Ricards Spaks and Patricio Zepeda earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
Nicholas Pierreux and
Alexandre Gaboardi followed with a 6-0 victory at No. 2, and
Sebastian Soria and
Daniel Gomes completed the sweep with a 6-0 decision at No. 3. The Hornets secured the doubles point with decisive performances across the board.
In singles play, Lynchburg quickly built on that momentum.
Sebastian Soria delivered a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to put the Hornets within reach of the match-clinching point.
Nicholas Pierreux added a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2, and
Alexandre Gaboardi sealed the team result with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 3.
Three additional singles matches were left unfinished once the team score reached four. At No. 1 singles,
Ricards Spaks led 6-0, 5-2 before play was halted.
Sebastian Sierra was in a third set at No. 4 after winning the first set 6-2 and splitting the second 4-6. At No. 6,
Alvaro Quiroga Amaya had begun his match and led 1-0 in the first set before it was stopped.
The Hornets resume action at the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head Island, S.C., first taking on Clark on Sunday, March 1 at 9 a.m.
