LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team dropped both contests of Friday's doubleheader against Muskingum at Moon Field, falling 7–5 in game one followed by a 4–3 loss in game two.
Game 1: Muskingum 7, Lynchburg 5
Lynchburg (2-2) grabbed the early advantage in the opening frame, as Hailey Schildt brought home Alex Love with two runners on to give the Hornets the lead. Muskingum (2-0) responded in the third inning with three unearned runs to claim its first lead of the afternoon.
The Hornets answered in the bottom half of the inning, matching the Muskies' three-run total to surge back in front. Bryanna Orange delivered a two-RBI single to center, and Georgia Thompson followed with a run-scoring double to left to give Lynchburg a 4-3 edge.
After a scoreless fourth, Lynchburg added to its lead in the fifth when Zoe Elliott lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Thompson and make it 5-3.
Muskingum responded decisively in the sixth. A two-run double tied the game before a go-ahead single later in the inning pushed the Muskies in front 7-5. Lynchburg was unable to generate a late rally and ultimately suffered its first loss of the season.
Game 2: Muskingum 4, Lynchburg 3
After four scoreless innings in the nightcap, Thompson broke through in the fourth with an RBI double to right, giving Lynchburg a 1-0 lead.
Muskingum answered in the fifth with a three-run home run to seize control. The Muskies added an insurance run in the sixth before Orange brought the Hornets back within one, launching a two-run homer to left that cut the deficit to 4-3. Lynchburg threatened late but could not find the equalizer.
The Hornets quickly turn around and look to regroup Saturday, Feb. 28, with a road doubleheader against Mary Washington.
