Softball Secures Run-Rule Sweep at Home Over Mary Baldwin

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The University of Lynchburg softball team swept Mary Baldwin in dominant fashion Wednesday afternoon at Moon Field, posting an 8-0 shutout in game one before earning a 13-5 victory in game two.

Game 1: Lynchburg 8, Mary Baldwin 0 (5 innings)

Lynchburg broke the game open with a four-run second inning and never looked back, cruising to a run-rule victory behind strong pitching and a balanced offensive effort.

The Hornets tallied five hits in the second, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Zoë Elliott and an RBI knock from Sydney Bryant. Sarah Watts added an RBI single later in the frame to cap the rally and give Lynchburg a 4-0 advantage.

Lynchburg continued to build separation with a run in the third and two more in the fourth. Hailey Schildt drove in a pair with a single in the fourth inning, finishing with a team-high three RBIs on a 2-for-2 day at the plate.

Elliott added two hits and two RBIs, while Watts collected two hits and drove in one.

In the circle, Kate Charlton set the tone with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four to earn the win. Chase Hartford closed the door with a clean fifth inning, striking out the side.

Game 2: Lynchburg 13, Mary Baldwin 5 (6 innings)

The Hornets carried their offensive momentum into game two, scoring in four of six innings to complete the sweep.

Lynchburg struck early, as Helen Maddux launched a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Hornets a quick lead. The advantage grew to 5-0 after two innings before Mary Baldwin answered with a four-run third to briefly tighten the contest.

Lynchburg responded immediately in the fourth with a five-run inning to regain control. The rally featured RBI hits from Alyssa Talayumptewa, Georgia Thompson, and Maddux, along with a two-RBI single from Bryanna Orange.

Maddux led the offensive surge with three hits, four RBIs, and the home run, while Orange added two hits and two RBIs. Talayumptewa scored three times and added a pair of hits, and Thompson chipped in two hits and an RBI.

After the early damage, Sydney Bryant settled things in the circle, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing just one run to earn the win in relief.

Lynchburg combined for 21 runs on 24 hits across the two games, controlling both contests from the early innings to secure the midweek sweep.
