Softball Clinches Second Straight ODAC Sweep

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball squad snatched their second straight sweep in conference play over EMU, 9-5 & 8-2, on Saturday to remain unblemished in ODAC competition. 

Game One: Lynchburg 9, EMU 5

In the opener, Lynchburg rallied late to secure a 9-5 victory. Eastern Mennonite took an early 2-1 lead in the first inning and extended its advantage to 4-1 through four innings. The Hornets responded in the fifth, tying the game on a three-run home run by Helen Maddux that scored Georgia Thompson and Sarah Watts.

After the teams traded runs in the sixth to make it 5-5, Lynchburg broke the game open in the seventh. Alex Love delivered an RBI single to give the Hornets a 6-5 lead before a fielding error by Eastern Mennonite allowed three additional unearned runs to score, pushing the margin to 9-5.

Maddux finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run, while Love went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Alyssa Talayumptewa added two hits, and Hailey Schildt doubled as part of Lynchburg's 10-hit effort.

Kate Charlton started in the circle, allowing four runs in 3.2 innings. Chase Hartford earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Game Two: Lynchburg 8, EMU 2

In game two, Lynchburg  jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in an 8-2 win.

The Hornets scored three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of two Eastern Mennonite errors. Alyssa Talayumptewa drove in two runs with a single, and Georgia Thompson followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Lynchburg added another run in the second on a groundout by Watts.

Leading 4-0, the Hornets broke the game open in the sixth inning. Maddux hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 7-0, and a Royals error brought in Schildt to score. 

Talayumptewa led the offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Maddux drove in three runs. Love and Schildt each recorded two hits, and Thompson added an RBI.

McKenzie Booth (pitched a complete game, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out five.
