Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- The University of Lynchburg men's tennis team matched up against Division I competition in Saint Francis and came away with a 5-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon.
The match began with doubles play, where the Hornets (4-1) secured a win at the top position.
Ricards Spaks and
Nicholas Pierreux earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. Saint Francis claimed the other two doubles matches, winning 6-4 at No. 2 and 6-3 at No. 3 to take the doubles point.
In singles play, Saint Francis captured the first four completed matches to secure the team result.
Ricards Spaks was defeated 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and
Nicholas Pierreux fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
Alexandre Gaboardi dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 3, while
Sebastian Sierra was defeated 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 position.
Lynchburg earned its two points in the final two singles matches. At No. 5 singles,
Alvaro Quiroga Amaya secured a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Daniel Gomes followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6.
After Saint Francis took the doubles point and four singles contests, the match finished with a 5-2 result. Lynchburg's wins came from the doubles pairing of Spaks and Pierreux along with singles victories from Quiroga Amaya and Gomes.
The Hornets have one more contest in the Spring Tennis Fest before returning home. Lynchburg will square off against Gordon College tomorrow, Thursday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m.
