LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team delivered a dominant offensive performance Sunday afternoon, defeating Piedmont University, 20–8, at Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg (6-1) used a balanced scoring attack and a strong opening half to pull away from Piedmont (3-6). After trading goals early in the first quarter, the Hornets began to find their rhythm offensively, closing the period on a 3–1 run to take a 5–2 advantage.
The momentum continued into the second quarter as Lynchburg added six more goals. McKenna Steinau sparked the surge with multiple scores, while Elizabeth Poitras and Sydney Dumas also found the back of the net to extend the Hornets' lead to 11–3 heading into halftime.
Piedmont attempted to chip away in the third quarter, but Lynchburg answered with key goals from Dumas, Gabriella Strano, and Lily Messineo to maintain control of the contest. The Hornets carried a 15–5 lead into the final frame.
Lynchburg sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with five more goals, including another pair from Steinau and scores from Poitras and Margaret Scoggin.
Steinau led all scorers with five goals, while Dumas added two goals and two assists. Poitras recorded a hat trick, and Messineo contributed two goals and two assists. Avery Washington also tallied a goal and an assist for the Hornets.
In goal, Olivia Owings played all 60 minutes for Lynchburg and made four saves while allowing eight goals.
As a team, Lynchburg held a commanding 35–14 advantage in shots and picked up 21 ground balls while forcing 22 Piedmont turnovers.
The Hornets continue non-conference play with a battle against Hood at home on deck for Tuesday, March 10.
