LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team dropped both ends of an ODAC doubleheader against Shenandoah on Friday at Moon Field, falling 11-7 in game one and 6-5 in game two.
Game 1
Lynchburg found itself in an early hole as Shenandoah plated four runs in the opening frame and added another in the second to take a 5-2 advantage. The Hornets answered immediately in the bottom of the first, as Hailey Schildt and Alyssa Talayumptewa each delivered RBI singles to cut into the deficit.
After being held quiet over the next two innings, Lynchburg surged in the fourth with a four-run rally to take its first lead of the day. Alex Love brought in a run with a sacrifice fly before Sarah Watts delivered the big swing, driving in three runs on a single that turned into a go-ahead moment following an error.
The Hornets added another run in the fifth on Love's second sacrifice fly, stretching the lead to 7-5. However, Shenandoah responded in the sixth, capitalizing on defensive miscues to tie the game, before breaking it open with three runs in the seventh to secure the 11-7 result.
Watts finished with three RBI, while Talayumptewa and Sydney Bryant each recorded two hits. Schildt also added a pair of hits and an RBI in the effort.
Game 2
The second game unfolded as a tightly contested battle, with both teams held scoreless through three innings before Shenandoah broke through with three runs in the fourth.
Lynchburg responded immediately in the bottom half with a four-run inning to take the lead. Alex Love highlighted the rally with a two-run single, while Georgia Thompson added two RBI on a clutch hit that was aided by an error, giving the Hornets a 4-3 edge.
The Hornets extended their lead to 5-3 in the fifth, as Love came through again with an RBI single following a leadoff double and aggressive baserunning from Helen Maddux.
Shenandoah chipped away in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game before delivering the decisive blow in the seventh, tying the game and then taking the lead on a late extra-base hit to complete the sweep.
Love led the Hornets offensively in game two, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Thompson added two hits and two RBI, while Maddux scored twice and recorded a double.
Lynchburg will look to bounce back in its next outing as the Hornets continue conference play tomorrow, April 12, at home against Bridgewater.
