Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Guilford College Saturday afternoon, claiming an 8-7 victory in game one before closing out the day with a 7-0 win in game two at Haworth Field.
Game One: Lynchburg 8, Guilford 7
In game one, Lynchburg (23-13, 12-4 ODAC) jumped out to an early lead and held off a late push from Guilford (15-20-1, 5-11 ODAC) to secure the 8-7 win. The Hornets plated two runs in the first inning and added another in the second before breaking the game open with a three-run third. Bryanna Orange highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, while Helen Maddux added an RBI single.
Lynchburg continued to add on with two runs in the sixth inning, as Hailey Schildt delivered an RBI double and Abby Lockhart followed with an RBI groundout. Guilford mounted a late rally with four runs in the seventh inning, but Kate Charlton went the distance in the circle to secure the win.
Georgia Thompson led the offense with two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Orange finished with two hits and two RBI. Schildt added a pair of doubles and two RBI, and Layla Lietzan recorded two hits in the victory.
Game Two: Lynchburg 7, Guilford 0
Lynchburg completed the sweep with a dominant 7-0 shutout over Guilford (15-20-1). The Hornets struck early with a run in the first inning before erupting for four runs in the second to take control of the contest.
Alex Love delivered a two-RBI triple in the second inning to key the offensive surge, while Georgia Thompson added an RBI and later contributed a run-scoring double in the sixth. Sarah Watts and Helen Maddux each recorded multi-hit performances, with Watts finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and Maddux going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the circle, McKenzie Booth was outstanding, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits and striking out one batter to earn the win.
Lynchburg totaled 11 hits in each game and controlled play throughout the afternoon to secure the conference sweep.
The Hornets return to the Hill City for the final regular season doubleheader at Moon Field against Averett on Tuesday, April 21.Â
