Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team swept its doubleheader against Sweet Briar on Tuesday at Aubrey R. Moon Field, taking game one 12-6 before walking off game two, 7-6.
Game One: Lynchburg 12, Sweet Briar 6
In the opener, Lynchburg (18-9) responded to an early 5-0 deficit with an explosive six-run first inning to seize control. Bryanna Orange highlighted the frame with a three-run home run, while Georgia Thompson, Alyssa Talayumptewa, and Helen Maddux each drove in runs as the Hornets flipped the game.
The offense continued to roll as Maddux added an RBI double in the second, and Sarah Watts launched a two-run homer in the third to extend the lead to 10-5. Orange finished a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Watts added three RBI. Thompson, Talayumptewa, and Maddux each recorded two hits in the win.
Kate Charlton went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits to secure the victory.
Game Two: Lynchburg 7, Sweet Briar 6
In game two, Lynchburg (19-9) again struck early, scoring once in the first and three times in the second behind a two-run homer from Orange and an RBI double from Watts to take a 4-0 advantage.
Sweet Briar answered with a five-run third inning and added another run in the fifth to move in front, 6-4, setting up late-game drama.
The Hornets delivered in the bottom of the seventh. Hailey Schildt led off with a solo home run before Orange tied the game with an RBI double. Moments later, Lynchburg capitalized on an error, as Layla Lietzan reached safely and the winning run crossed the plate to complete the comeback.
Orange led the offense once again with three hits and three RBI, while Sydney Bryant added two hits and scored twice. Watts contributed two hits and an RBI.
Chase Hartford earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings to close out the sweep.
