Hornet Men's Soccer Defeats Gettysburg 2-1
Stephen Brooks Scores Twice for LC
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Junior Stephen Brooks (pictured left - Fairfax, VA/Paul VI) found the back of the new twice Saturday to lead the Lynchburg College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Gettysburg College in the first game of the University of Mary Washington Classic.
The Bullets opened the scoring 11:38 into the contest when Craig Heckman converted a deflection off the LC defense into a tally for GC. Brooks answered 24 minutes into the half, heading in a pass from Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham), and the game was tied at one all entering intermission.
Brooks and Abbonizio teamed up again for the contest's deciding goal just after halftime. Off a corner kick, Brooks again headed in an Abbonizio feed at the 53:25 mark.
The Hornets controlled much of the game action and had sizeable advantages in shots (16-5) and corner kicks (8-2). Gettysburg keeper Mike Walmer made six saves.
The Hornets (1-1) are scheduled to play the College of New Jersey Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Classic's final game.
