LC Splits Double-Header With Berry

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Lynchburg College baseball team split a double-header on Friday with Berry College, losing the first game 3-1 and winning the second 7-1 in non-conference play.

The Hornets fell behind in the third inning of the first game when Berry took advantage of a wild pitch that scored one and a RBI single by the Vikings' Madison Moss to make the lead 2-0.

Lynchburg got on the board with two runs later in the fifth. With runners on second and third, sophomore Brock Shiflett (Henrico, VA/Steward School) grounded out to the shortstop allowing senior Mike Walters (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) to score. The next batter, senior Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) singled to right field scoring Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) to tie the game at two.

With the bases loaded in the seventh and final frame, Lynchburg's Robert Garrett (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) walked in the winning run, giving Berry the 3-2 win.

Freshman Michael Mansfield (Richmond, VA/Henrico) started the game for Lynchburg, going four innings, allowing four hits, two runs and striking out four. Garrett earned the loss, while Casey Gray earned the win for Berry.

The second game however, was all Lynchburg. Freshman Trevor Johnston (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) pitched a gem, going all seven innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out four.

Lynchburg provided support for their freshman pitcher in the first inning courtesy of a RBI single from Colquhoun, and a two-out double by freshman shortstop Jake Tanner which drove in three runs. A fielding error gave way to a run for the Vikings in the top of the second but Johnston shut Berry down for the rest of the game.

The Hornets scored twice in the fifth inning and added another run in the bottom of the sixth off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Michael Del Buono (Clifton, VA/Robinson) to make the score 7-1.

Josh Dilbeck earned the loss for Berry (3-10).

Lynchburg (2-1) will play Methodist College tomorrow in Fayetteville at 1 p.m.
