LC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader against Meredith
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team opened its 2011 season Saturday with a double-header sweep of visiting Meredith College in non-conference play.
Lynchburg led 4-3 early in the opener, and exploded for eight in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the contest a 12-3 winner in six innings. A grand slam off the bat of junior shortstop Taylor Walker (Puquoson, VA/Puquoson) fueled the sixth-inning outburst.
Senior Ashley Hohenberger (Wake Forest, NC/Longwood) was 2-3 with a triple, three runs and two RBI while Melanie Tenney (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) had two hits and scored twice in her first collegiate softball contest. Meagan Fredenberg (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) also drove in two runs. Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) worked all six innings for LC, scattering seven hits while striking out six for the victory. Arielle Stout was 2-3 with three RBI for the Angels.
The Hornets scored two runs in the bottom of the second and that's was all the Hornet pitching staff would need in the nightcap in a 5-1 win. Senior Caitlin Dolby (Laurel, DE/Laurel) earned the win, working 4 2/3 innings with seven hits, no walks and just one earned run. Sophomore Tiffany Merrill (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the save. Bruce was 2-2 with a walk, while three Meredith errors led to three LC unearned runs. Emily Cooke was a perfect 3-3 for the Angels (1-5).
The Hornets (2-0) are slated to compete next weekend at the Methodist Tournament.
