LC Defeats Guilford in Conference Opener
LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior starting pitcher Matt Morgan (Bedford, VA/Liberty) pitched seven solid innings as the Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Guilford College 9-2 on Saturday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.
Morgan gave up five hits and two runs, striking out five in the game. Sophomore designated hitter Michael Del Buono (Clifton, VA/Robinson) went 2-5 in the game with three RBI.
Lynchburg began the scoring in the first inning after senior Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) drew a walk with the bases loaded. Del Buono batted in a run in the inning, giving LC an early 2-0 lead.
Guilford tied the game in the top of the second with a two-RBI single from Jay Cox. The Hornets took the lead in the fourth inning after a RBI-double from senior Richie Palase (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic). Senior Mike Walters (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) added a two-RBI single in the inning as well. Del Buono singled in two runs in the fifth as well.
Junior Ragan Rudisill (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) and sophomore Brock Shiflett (Henrico, VA/Steward School) also added runs in the eighth inning to give Lynchburg the 9-2 victory.
Zach Daw (1-1) earned the loss for the Quakers (3-8/0-1 ODAC).
Freshman James Womack (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and sophomore Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) pitched a combined two innings of scoreless relief. Morgan earned the win (2-0).
Lynchburg (4-5/1-1 ODAC) travels to play Guilford tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
