Hornets Shutdown EMU, Sweep Doubleheader
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team swept Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday in a doubleheader 6-0 and 7-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
Lynchburg began the first game with two runs in the third inning. Senior Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) scored on an error and senior Mike Walters (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) drove in sophomore Michael Burks (Frederick, MD/Tuscarora).
Watkins, Walters, freshman Jake Tanner (Big Island, VA/Liberty) and senior Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) all singled in runs in the sixth inning to give Lynchburg the 6-0 win. Senior Matt Morgan (Bedford, VA/Liberty) pitched six innings giving up four hits and no runs while striking out six.
Junior Robert Garrett (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) pitched three solid innings of relief work to close out the game giving up no hits or runs. Morgan earned the win (4-0) while EMU pitcher Andy Richter took the loss. Lynchburg gave up only four hits all game.
The Hornets jumped out early in the second game with a three-run inning in the first. Walters and Colquhoun along with junior Ragan Rudisill (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) has a RBI each in the inning.
EMU would strike back in the fifth inning with three runs to tie the game. Sophomore Michael Kenah (Clifton, VA/Robinson) scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning with a RBI-single to score Rudisill. Colquhoun hit a two-run homerun in the seventh and junior Richard Palase (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) singled in a run in the eighth to cap the 7-3 win.
Freshman James Womack (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) earned his third win of the year going six innings and giving up five hits. Garrett pitched three innings of relief and gave up one hit while earning a save.
Jason Tate worked seven innings for Eastern Mennonite (6-16/1-8 ODAC) earning the loss.
Lynchburg (12-9/6-2 ODAC) head to Ferrum College on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 5 pm.
