Hornet Softball Impressive in DH Sweep of Randolph-Macon
Sunday's DH Postponed until April 10
LYNCHBURG, VA - Senior right-hander Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) picked up two wins and hit a grand slam Saturday afternoon to lead the Lynchburg College softball team to a pair of victories over visiting Randolph-Macon College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader.
R-MC got on the board first in the opener, thanks to a two-run home run from Lauren Bauer in the top of the fourth inning. Lynchburg answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame, as a Meagan Fredenberg two-run single plated Rachel Gallagher and Taylor Walker. The Hornet bats followed up in the fifth inning with four runs, fueled by a solo home run by Melanie Tenney, a two-run shot from Walker and an RBI single from Stephanie Fedrigo. LC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and won 7-2.
Bruce was efficient in the circle, allowing three hits and three walks for the complete-game victory. Walker, Sarah Smith and Gallagher each had two hits for LC.
Lynchburg posted a 12-3 win in five innings in the second contest. The Hornets erupted in the first inning for six runs; Gallagher and Fredenberg hit RBI singles and Bruce drilled a grand slam over the left-field fence. LC scored three more in the second, as Smith, Gallagher and Fredenberg each contributed RBI base hits.
The Yellow Jackets (16-6/6-4 ODAC) scored single runs in the second, third and fourth frames, but Gallagher ended the game via the eight-run rule on a two-run blast with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Gallagher finished the game 3-3 with a homer, three runs and four RBI. Fedrigo and Fredenberg each had two hits and Ashley Hohenberger also had a run-scoring single. Bruce allowed one earned run in three innings for her second win of the day and Caitlin Dolby didn't allow an earned run in her two innings of relief. Lauren Nanny went 3-3 for R-MC.
Lynchburg (16-8/4-4 ODAC) travels to Bridgewater College for another ODAC doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m. The scheduled Hornet/Virginia Wesleyan College twin bill scheduled for Sunday has been postponed until April 10 due to expected inclement weather.
