LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior Lesley Buckingham and sophomore Kendall Adkin each posted three goals and an assist as the Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team held off a late Roanoke College rally for a 12-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory Wednesday evening.
The Hornets scored the game's first two goals, but the Maroons rattled off the next four, two each from Meegan Rourke and Carolyn Miller. The teams traded two scores before Julie Will and Buckingham scored back-to-back goals heading into halftime to tie the game at six.
Five-straight Hornet goals to start off the second half and solid play from the defense put the Hornets ahead 11-6 with 11 minutes remaining. Roanoke's Rourke found the back of the net at 10:20, but neither team scored for the next eight minutes until RC cut the deficit to three at 2:16 on a goal from Gina Valles. Lynchburg looked to have put the game away with a tally from Morgan Logue with 1:35 on the game clock but the Maroons answered with back-to-back goals to pull to 12-10 with 41 seconds left. Buckingham forced a Maroon turnover with under 30 seconds remaining and the Hornets ran out the clock.
Sophomore Sarah Shannon had a stellar game for LC, totaling two goals, seven groundballs and five caused turnovers. Logue scored twice, Patty Sheahan and Julie Will each had one goal and Buckingham also had six draw controls and caused four turnovers on the evening. Junior Christina Tran made 15 stops in goal and scooped a game-high 13 ground balls.
Rourke had five goals to lead Roanoke (4-5/1-2 ODAC). Miller contributed two goals and three assists and Valles finished with a goal and two assists.
