LYNCHBURG, VA – Kaitlin Quigley and Rachel Tomlinson combined to score nine goals Saturday afternoon as the Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team rallied for a 14-11 victory Saturday at Lynchburg College in non-conference action.
The two teams traded goals in the early going and the contest was tied at 3-3 midway through the first half. The Hornets rattled off three-straight scores to go ahead 6-3, but the Captains netted three-straight goals of their own to knot the score at six all. Sophomore Kendall Adkin (New Milford, CT/New Milford) scored from Julie Will (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) with four minutes left and the two reversed roles a minute later for a tally to send LC into intermission with an 8-6 edge.
The Captains came out strong after the break with four unanswered goals, two from Tomlinson to forge a 10-8 lead. Lesley Buckingham (Herndon, VA/Herndon) stopped the streak with a Hornet goal, but CNU scored the next three times (two on goals by Quigley) to pull ahead for good.
Buckingham joined Adkin and Will as three-goal scorers for LC, and Adkin added three helpers. Morgan Logue (Barrington, IL/Barrington) posted a goal and an assist.
Quigley finished with five goals and two assists for Christopher Newport (3-0), while Tomlinson had four scores. Ashton Marshall had two goals and Meghan Harkey contributed with a goal and four assists.
LC had a slight advantage in total shots (34-31), while CNU keeper Hannah Wilkerson made 14 stops.
The Hornets (2-1) travel to Myrtle Beach for games against Drew University Tuesday and Ursinus College Wednesday over Spring Break.
