W&L Women's Lacrosse Squeaks Past Lynchburg 7-6
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Washington & Lee University women's lacrosse team took sole possession of first place Sunday with a 7-6 victory at Lynchburg College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match.
The Generals got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Kate Donnelly two minutes into play. LC answered back with two goals off free position shots from junior Lesley Buckingham and sophomore Kendall Adkin. Margaret Klein tied the score for W&L with eight minutes left in the first and Buckingham scored again to give LC a 3-2 advantage. Donnelly and Alli Shearin scored to give W&L a 4-3 lead at intermission.
LC's Julie Will tied the game again on a free position shot after the break, but Emmy Mathews put the Generals back ahead by one. Buckingham delivered her third tally of the night to knot the score at five with 21:42 on the game clock, but Mathews scored two more times to put the Generals ahead 7-5. Lynchburg's Adkin avoided two W&L defenders to score with 5:09 left, but the General offense held onto the ball the final two minutes to close out the game.
Christina Tran made 14 saves for LC to keep her team close despite getting outshot 27-18. Katharine Farrar made six stops for W&L (9-4/6-0 ODAC).
Lynchburg travels across town to Randolph College for another ODAC game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
