Lynchburg Splits Doubleheader with Guilford
GREENSBORO, NC – The Lynchburg College softball team split their doubleheader with Guilford College on Sunday, dropping the first game 7-5 and winning the second 5-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
In the first game, Guilford took a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lynchburg responded with two runs in the top of the fifth off a two-RBI single from senior Rachel Gallagher (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier). The Quakers put up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth.
Lynchburg rallied in the seventh after Gallagher hit another two-RBI single while freshman Amanda Parker (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) added a RBI-single to cut the Guilford lead to 7-5. However, Quakers starting pitcher Jessica Burcham was able to end the game and the rally for the Hornets. Starting pitcher Caitlin Dolby (Laurel, DE/Laurel) went three and two-thirds innings giving up four runs.
In the second game, Lynchburg started off scoring, with one run in the first inning and two more in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Senior Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Sarah Smith (Danville, VA/Tunstall) in the first frame. Freshman Melanie Tenney (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) doubled in a run and Smith doubled to score Tenney in the second inning.
Guilford notched one run in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third but Lynchburg was able to take a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning to seal the game. Senior Ashley Hohenberger (Wake Forest, NC/Longwood) doubled scoring Gallagher and Bruce scored an insurance run after a balk.
Bruce pitched all seven innings in the second game, earning the win.
Ashley Boteler started the game for Guilford (18-12/4-8 ODAC), and gave up five runs and struck out one.
Lynchburg (17-13/5-9 ODAC) hosts Ferrum College Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
