LC Softball Powers to 16-0, 28-0 Sweep of Sweet Briar
LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman Amanda Parker (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) was 9-for-10 Friday afternoon and drove in seven runs as the Lynchburg College softball team cruised to 16-0 and 28-0 victories over Sweet Briar College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Hornets scored five runs each in the first and second innings of the opener and added six in the third frame. Parker was 4-4 with a double, three runs and two RBI. Fellow freshmen Melanie Tenney (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) and Nicole Shipp (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) each had three singles and a stolen base while Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) was 2-3 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Rachel Gallagher (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier), Taylor Walker (Poquoson, VA/Poquoson) and Cassie Phillips (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) each homered for the Hornets. Bruce worked three innings for the win, allowing just one hit while striking out eight Vixens, including four punch-outs in the third inning. Caitlin Dolby (Laurel, DE/Laurel) allowed only one base runner in two innings of relief.
LC didn't wait long to get on the scoreboard in the nightcap, tallying 13 in the first inning and following with six in the second and finishing with nine in the fourth. Parker was 4-5 with a double, a home run and five RBI, while Ashley Hohenberger (Wake Forest, NC/Longwood) was 4-4 with two doubles, a home run, five runs scored and three driven in. Logan-Ann Gittman (Glen Allen, VA/Hermitage) was also 4-5 with three runs scored and a grand slam and Gallagher was 2-2 with a double, a home run and six RBI. Sarah Smith (Danville, VA/Tunstall) and Leah Poehner (Troutville, VA/Lord Botetourt) each went 2-3 and Tenney had a hit, three walks and scored four times. Dolby threw two innings and walked just one batter, and Phillips threw three perfect frames of relief with three strikeouts for the win.
The Hornets (19-15/7-9 ODAC) host Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in more ODAC action.
