Lynchburg Softball Completes DH Sweep of Averett

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team completed a sweep of Averett University in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. LC won the first game 7-2 and defeated the Cougars 4-3 in the second matchup.

In the first game, Lynchburg was led by senior shortstop Taylor Walker who went 2-3 with three RBI in the victory. Sophomore Melanie Tenney, senior Sarah Smith, senior Meagan Fredenberg, and freshman Kacey Clary each added an RBI as well.

Averett led initially in the game after Brooke Hensley homered to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. LC answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Jessi Hall tripled and was brought home by Tenney who singled. Walker doubled in two runs while Smith hit a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the Hornets a 4-1 lead.

After an Averett run in the fourth, Clary singled in freshman Hope Johnson in the fifth inning to push Lynchburg's lead to 5-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Fredenberg and Walker each singled in the sixth, giving LC a 7-2 final score. Freshman Amber Ingram pitched a solid seven innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and two walks while striking out three. Amy Hamlett took the loss for the Cougars.

In the second game, Lynchburg was led by Ingram who knocked in three RBI, going 2-4 at the plate. Sophomore Cassie Phillips also added an RBI in the game.

LC started off fast in the first inning of the second game. Tenney doubled which was followed by a homer from Ingram. Philips singled in Fredenberg as well, giving Lynchburg a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Smith doubled and then Ingram tripled, scoring Smith. Facing a 4-0 lead, Averett added one run in the top of the fourth and in the fifth. During the seventh inning, the Cougars threatened by scoring one run, but starting pitcher freshman Kaitlyn Morris forced a groundout to help LC win 4-3.

Morris pitched all seven innings, giving up two earned runs while only walking one.

Lisa Mitro went three and one-thirds for Averett (0-2) innings in the circle, giving up all four runs. Lauren Averitt went 3-4 with two RBI in the game.

Lynchburg (3-1) heads to the Emory University Tournament next weekend, beginning with an 11:45 a.m. matchup with Emory.
