Hornet Softball Sweeps Ferrum

FERRUM, VA –The Lynchburg College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Monday at Ferrum College by scores of 7-5 and 4-3 in 10 innings. The twinbill had been moved from Sunday due to adverse weather conditions.

The Hornets trailed 5-0 after four innings in the opener before the offense got untracked. An RBI single from senior Sarah Smith in the fifth cut the lead to 5-1, and LC exploded for five runs in the sixth. Melanie Tenney and Jessi Hall each had two-run singles in the sixth, and Lynchburg was aided by three Panther errors in the inning. LC added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Hope Johnson earned the victory in the circle for the Hornets, her second-straight win. Tenney finished with two hits, while Rachel Shumaker was a perfect 4-4 at the plate for FC with two doubles.

Lynchburg received an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Kaitlyn Morris in the nightcap. She worked all 10 frames, scattering nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts and just one earned run to earn the victory. The game was scoreless until the seventh inning, and Hornet Michaela Munday led off with a double for LC. She would later score on an error to put Lynchburg up 1-0, but the Panthers scored in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.

A runner is placed on second base to start each half inning of extra innings in NCAA softball, and both teams took advantage by scoring single runs in the eighth and ninth frames. In the 10th and deciding inning, the Hornets scored a run on a passed ball, and with runners on first and third and two outs, Morris induced the Ferrum hitter to ground out to end the game.

Munday had two hits for Lynchburg, and Tenney had the Hornets' only other hit. Kaitlyn Culler was the tough-luck loser for Ferrum, allowing no earned runs over 10 innings with just three hits and two walks allowed. Karly Thompson and Suzanne Plasters each had two hits for FC (21-7).

Lynchburg (10-10) hosts 11th-ranked Christopher Newport University Tuesday at 3 p.m. in more non-conference action.
