Hornet Softball Splits Doubleheader at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Randolph-Macon College in a battle of teams near the top of the conference standings.

R-MC scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to win the opener 3-2. The Yellow Jackets plated two runs in the bottom of the third off a two-run home run from Laura Bauer. The score remained 2-0 until two outs were recorded in the top of the seventh. Following a R-MC error, freshman Amber Ingram drilled a two-run home run to left field to even the score. Randolph-Macon scored with one out in the seventh off a sacrifice fly from Heather Lewis to end the contest.

Senior Taylor Walker had LC's only other base-hit, as Lewis threw a two-hitter for the Yellow Jackets, with one walk and no earned runs allowed. Bauer and Amanda Sopko each had two hits. Freshman Hope Johnson scattered eight hits and two walks for LC in a complete game.

Freshman Kaitlyn Morris threw a complete-game shutout in the nightcap en route to a 4-0 Hornet victory. She allowed just three hits and no walks to stop the Randolph-Macon winning streak at nine games. The Hornets scored single runs in the second and third and added two insurance tallies in the fifth. Sophomore Michaela Munday went 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, and sophomore Melanie Tenney, Ingram and freshman Skylar Seals each had two hits. Randolph-Macon ends the doubleheader with a 23-9 mark overall and 9-3 in conference action.

The Hornets (16-14/7-3) face Virginia Wesleyan College Sunday at 1 p.m. in another ODAC twinbill.
