LC Women's Lacrosse Comeback Bid Falls Short, Loses 8-6 at #15 W & L

LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team's valiant comeback came up short on Saturday, as they dropped an 8-6 decision at nationally ranked #15 Washington and Lee University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

The Generals started off the scoring two minutes in with an opener from Alli Shearin, who had been denied by freshman Hailey Bossert earlier in the game.  W & L would score the next two, with goals coming from Meade Brewster and Julia Van Sant. 

Katie Seidel took the ensuing draw control and Kendall Adkin put one in the back of the net for the Hornets' first goal.  Lesley Buckingham and Bri Slate would each add goals to tie the game for Lynchburg.  Margaret Klein scored for the Generals with 9:40 left to go into the half with a 4-3 lead.

After the intermission, it was all W & L for the first 25 minutes.  The Generals scored four times, with tallies coming from Samantha Yates, Alex Van Horn, Shearin, and a second from Yates.  With 4:20 left on the clock, Buckingham added her second of the day to cut the lead to 8-4.

Lynchburg would continue their comeback with goals by Julie Will and Carley Dobson, putting the score at 8-6.  However, there was not enough time on the clock to mount another comeback.

Buckingham led LC with two goals and four draw controls in the game.  The defense had one of their best showings of the year, holding the Generals to a season-low eight goals.  Brianna LaMarca scooped up three groundballs and caused two turnovers to lead the defense in the loss.  Bossert got her third start of the season in goal for the Hornets.  She made eight saves while facing 29 shots in the contest.  She added three groundballs and one caused turnover.

Washington and Lee (11-3 overall, 7-0 ODAC) was led by Shearin and Yates, who each had two goals on the day.  Maddie McKaig assisted on two goals and Cara Mulligan made six saves in 54 minutes of action.

The Hornets (8-6, 5-2) return to action on Wednesday, with their final home game of the regular season.  They play host to cross-town rival Randolph College in ODAC play, with the game slated to start at 4 p.m.
